After last weeks poor result against St. Andrews the new management team of Kevin Smith and John Martin were looking for a big response from the players against todays opponents Leith Athletic who are top of Conference A.
First half
After all the heavy rain the pitch was very heavy but very much playable thanks to the hard working committee members and especially Rob Wilson. The new management team made a few changes to the line up from last week. Glens won the first free kick of the game inside two minutes twenty yards from goal from which the effort from Martin struck the defensive wall, a minute later Duff broke down the wing only for his cross to hit a defender. On five minutes The Glens conceded a foul on the eighteen yard line which the trialist keeper saved, two minutes later inside a thirty second spell Glens missed two chances to take the lead firstly through Martin and secondly a header from C. Schiavone. Then a minute later an excellent cross from L. Schiavone across the face of the goal found no takers. At the other end in a rare attack Kerr missed an opportunity to open the scoring when he failed to connect from a cross by Redpath. On thirteen minutes Glens took a deserved lead when a corner found the head of Martin which struck the crossbar and rebounded to the waiting McLeod-Kay to head home. The Glens were unlucky two minutes later when an effort from McLeod-Kay just slipped past the post, from another corner Martin just headed wide. On the half hour the away side won their first corner of the game which was cleared by the defence, three minutes later an effort from Wilson struck the post with the trialist goalkeeper nowhere. The away side were now having their best spell in the game and a header from Wilson narrowly missed the goal, the trialist keeper had to look sharp to save with his legs a shot from Brown. On forty two minutes Glens conceded a foul on the eighteen yard line from which the defence cleared for a corner, from the resultant kick Redpath headed home at the far post. an excellent first half was spoiled by conceding a soft goal late into the half.
2nd half
The away side made two changes at the start of the second half Veitch and Garvey replacing Kerr and Summers. The first chance of the second half fell to Duff but his header was saved by McGinley, both teams were finding it difficult pass the ball on the heavy pitch. A header from Veitch saved by trialist, a fine run from Martin was halted inside the eighteen yard box by a well timed tackle from Smith. Thirty seconds later McGinley made a fine save from the head of Lane. Another run from Martin had mcginley having to look sharp to save his effort. On the hour mark Denton replaced Lane, a minute later Russell replaced Martin. On sixty three minutes glens were awarded a penalty kick when McLeod-Kay was fouled inside the box. Denton was given the opportunity to regain the lead but McGinlay made a excellent save from the kick. Lamont then replaced Duff. From a free kick A. McDonald headed wide. An excellent cross field from C. Schiavone found his namesake only to see his effort miss the goal by inches. The away side won a succession of balls of which came to nothing. from another free kick a header from C. Schiavone saved by McGinley. Trialist keeper had to look sharp by tipping a shot from Shaw over the crossbar, McGinlay made another fine save from a effort from Russell. Now with the game looking like a draw in the final minute McLeod-Kay broke clear beating a couple of defenders on his way to goal only to see his effort hit the post then another saved by McGinley but the keeper could not hold the ball and it broke to Russell who fired it home to give The Glens a deserved victory.
Overall an excellent result from a very hard working team a 100% performance from all the team and they now can look forward to the long journey to Berwick next saturday to play Tweedmouth.
